All 7 Mnemonics for Principles of Inheritance and Variation

1. Mendel's 7 pea traits — "SPA-FiPS-Se"

Mnemonic Device
Stem · Pod colour · Axial(flower position) · Fi=Flower colour · Pod shape · Seed shape · Seed colour
Stem Tall vs Dwarf
Flower colour Violet vs White
Flower position Axial vs Terminal
Pod shape Inflated vs Constricted
Pod colour Green vs Yellow
Seed shape Round vs Wrinkled
Seed colour Yellow vs Green

2. Mendel's 3 laws — "DSI" (Do Sums Independently)

Mnemonic Device
Dominance → Segregation → Independent assortment
D Dominance — one factor masks the other
S Segregation — alleles separate into gametes (purity of gametes)
I Independent Assortment — from the DIHYBRID cross (needs 2 pairs)

3. Dihybrid ratio — "9-3-3-1"

Mnemonic Device
9 both-dominant : 3 : 3 single-dominant : 1 both-recessive
9 Round Yellow (both dominant)
3 Round Green
3 Wrinkled Yellow
1 Wrinkled Green (both recessive)

4. Blood group O = "ii" (nothing shown)

Mnemonic Device
AB = both antigens (co-dominance) · O = ii = no antigen
AB IᴬIᴮ — both sugars made → co-dominance
O ii — universal donor, no antigen
3 alleles Iᴬ, Iᴮ, i → multiple allelism

5. Sex systems — "Girls Grab XO, Birds ZW"

Mnemonic Device
XX–XO grasshopper · XX–XY humans · ZW–ZZ birds (female ZW)
XO Grasshopper — male has no Y
XY Humans/Drosophila — male heterogametic
ZW Birds — FEMALE is the heterogametic (ZW) one

6. Chromosomal disorders — "Down-21, Klinefelter +X, Turner −X"

Mnemonic Device
Down = +21 · Klinefelter = XXY · Turner = X0
Down Trisomy 21 (extra chromosome 21)
Klinefelter 47 XXY — sterile male, gynaecomastia
Turner 45 X0 — sterile female

7. Thalassemia vs Sickle — "QuaNtity vs QuaLity"

Mnemonic Device
Thalassemia = quaNtity (too few chains) · Sickle = quaLity (wrong chain)
N Thalassemia — reduced number of globin chains
L Sickle-cell — structurally abnormal (Glu→Val) globin
