NEET Mnemonics
Cell Cycle & Cell Division Mnemonics
12 memory tricks · NCERT-based · NEET 2027 · Core
How to use these mnemonics: Read each acronym device aloud, then trace through the letter-by-letter expansion below it. Visualise the linked concepts. Test yourself by covering the expansion and recalling from the device alone.
All 12 Mnemonics for Cell Cycle & Cell Division
1. Order of mitosis
Mnemonic Device
IPMAT → Please Make A Two
Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase. For the M-phase stages alone: P-M-A-T = 'Please Make A Two' — one cell becomes two.
2. What each mitosis stage does
Mnemonic Device
Pack · Middle · Apart · Two
Prophase = Pack (chromatin condenses), Metaphase = Middle (equator), Anaphase = Apart (chromatids split), Telophase = Two nuclei reform.
3. Interphase sub-phases
Mnemonic Device
Grow · Sync · Get-ready
G1 = Grow (no DNA copy), S = Synthesis (DNA copies, 2C→4C), G2 = Get ready . G0 = paused — alive but not dividing.
4. Prophase-I sub-stages
Mnemonic Device
Lazy Zebras Pull Down Drapes
Leptotene · Zygotene · Pachytene · Diplotene · Diakinesis — the five steps of the longest meiotic stage, in order.
5. Zygotene vs Pachytene
Mnemonic Device
Zip, then sWaP
Zygotene = Zip together (synapsis). Pachytene = swaP segments (crossing over).
6. Diplotene = X marks the spot
Mnemonic Device
DipLotene → chiasmata visible
In Diplotene the synaptonemal complex dissolves and the chiasmata (X-shapes) finally become visible.
7. Anaphase I vs II
Mnemonic Device
I = homologues, II = sisters
Anaphase I : homologous chromosomes separate (chromatids still joined). Anaphase II : sister chromatids separate. Never mix these up.
8. Cytokinesis: plant vs animal
Mnemonic Device
Plants Plate, Animals Pinch
Plant cells build a cell Plate (centre→out). Animal cells form a cleavage furrow that Pinches inward (out→in).
9. Reductional vs Equational
Mnemonic Device
Meiosis-I Reduces, Meiosis-II Equals
Meiosis I = Reductional (2n→n, homologues split). Meiosis II = Equational like mitosis (sister chromatids split).
10. Two sources of variation
Mnemonic Device
Cross & Assort
Variation in meiosis comes from Cross ing over (Pachytene) + independent Assort ment of homologues (Metaphase I).
11. S-phase golden rule
Mnemonic Device
DNA doubles, number doesn't
In S phase DNA content 2C→4C but chromosome number stays 2n . Doubling ≠ number change.
12. G0 cells that don't divide
Mnemonic Device
Heart & Head
Classic G0 / non-dividing examples: Heart muscle cells and Head = neurons (nerve cells).
